The novel follows the adventures of a young man named Kiyo, who is sent to a remote Japanese village to investigate a mysterious fox woman. Kiyo soon discovers that the fox woman is actually a kitsune, a magical fox spirit, and that she is being hunted by a powerful sorcerer. Kiyo must use his wits and courage to protect the fox woman and uncover the secrets of the sorcerer's dark magic. The novel is set in a mythical version of feudal Japan, and features a variety of supernatural creatures, including dragons, demons, and ghosts. It is a classic example of Merritt's blend of fantasy and horror, and is considered one of his best works.
