Born in 1870 in Vilna, Russian Empire (now Lithuania), Alexander Berkman was a Russian-American anarchist and writer. He immigrated to the United States with his family at age nine. Berkman became involved in radical politics while still a teenager and attempted to assassinate industrialist Henry Clay Frick in 1892. Imprisoned for 14 years, he continued to write and advocate for anarchism upon release.
