Alexander Joseph Finberg (1866–1939) was an English art historian and author. He was born in London and educated at the City of London School and University College London. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a member of the Royal Archaeological Institute. Finberg wrote several books on art history, including A History of English Painting (1909), The Italian Primitives (1912), and The Art of the Renaissance in Northern Europe (1919). He also wrote a number of articles for the Burlington Magazine and other publications. He was a curator at the National Gallery in London from 1910 to 1921, and was appointed Director of the National Gallery in 1921. He held this position until his retirement in 1931. Finberg was a respected authority on Italian Renaissance art, and his works remain important sources of information on the subject. He was also a noted collector of art, and his collection was bequeathed to the National Gallery upon his death in 1939.
