Alexander Martin (1740–1807) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the first Governor of North Carolina from 1782 to 1784. He was a signer of the United States Constitution and a delegate to the Continental Congress. Martin was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and was educated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1764. He moved to Salisbury, North Carolina in 1773 and became a leader in the American Revolution. He was a member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress from 1775 to 1776 and a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1778. Martin was a signer of the United States Constitution in 1787 and was elected as the first Governor of North Carolina in 1782. He served until 1784 and was succeeded by Richard Caswell. Martin was a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1787 to 1790 and was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1793 to 1795. Martin died in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1807. He is buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery in Salisbury.
