Alfonso de Valdés (1490–1532) was a Spanish humanist, theologian, and writer. He was born in Burgos, Spain, and studied at the University of Salamanca. He was a close friend of the famous humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, and was a major influence on the development of Spanish Renaissance literature. Valdés was a prolific writer, producing works on a variety of topics, including theology, philosophy, and literature. He wrote several books, including a commentary on the Bible, a treatise on rhetoric, and a work of dialogues. He also wrote a number of plays, including the popular comedy El Lazarillo de Tormes. Valdés was an important figure in the Spanish Inquisition, serving as a censor of books and a judge in the tribunal. He was also a member of the Council of the Indies, which was responsible for the administration of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Valdés died in 1532, leaving behind a legacy of influential works that continue to be studied and appreciated today.
