Towles was born in 1964 in Germany to American parents. He spent his childhood moving between the United States and Europe. He graduated from Yale University and worked on Wall Street before turning to writing full-time. His debut novel, published in 2011, received critical acclaim for its nostalgic portrayal of pre-revolutionary Russia.
