The story takes place in a distant future where humanity has colonized other planets. The protagonist, Captain Jellico, is a trader who operates in the Xecho system. He receives an offer from Chief Ranger Asaki of Khatka to visit the planet and survey a new hunting range as personal guests. The Rangers on Khatka have the right to grant guest rights to visiting scientists or men holding similar positions, making this opportunity almost incredible for Captain Jellico. The story also introduces Medic Tau, who has studied magic on various worlds. He is invited by Chief Ranger Asaki to visit the new Zoboru preserve and help with a mysterious problem involving a killing magic that is being used to rid Khatka of key men. The Chief Ranger believes that this magic may be connected to the death of his ancestors. The story also mentions Sindbad, a Terran cat who is friendly towards the Khatkan people. The Chief Ranger is particularly fond of Sindbad and offers him a home in his courts if he ever grows tired of traveling the stars. The plot thickens as Captain Jellico agrees to visit Khatka with Medic Tau and Dane, his acting-cargo-master. They are warned by Medic Tau to be careful and prepared for the worst, as they will be dealing with a mysterious and potentially deadly magic.
