Andrew Thomson (1813–1865) was a Scottish poet and minister of the Church of Scotland. He was born in Edinburgh and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He was ordained in 1837 and served as a minister in various parishes in Scotland. Thomson was a prolific writer, publishing several volumes of poetry, including The Sabbath (1863), which was widely praised. He also wrote several hymns, including “Lead, Kindly Light” and “The Sands of Time are Sinking.” He was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and wrote several tracts on the subject. He was also a strong advocate for the temperance movement. Thomson died in 1865 at the age of 52. He is buried in the churchyard of St. Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh.
