Ángeles Mastretta (born December 9, 1949) is a Mexican novelist, journalist, and essayist. She is best known for her novel Arráncame la vida (Tear This Heart Out), which was adapted into a 2008 film of the same name. Mastretta was born in Puebla, Mexico. She studied philosophy and literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She began her career as a journalist in the 1970s, writing for the newspaper Excélsior. She has also written for the magazines Siempre!, Proceso, and Vuelta. Mastretta's first novel, Arráncame la vida, was published in 1985 and was an immediate success. It was translated into several languages and adapted into a film in 2008. Her other novels include Mal de amores (1989), La emperatriz de los etéreos (1993), and El último catón (1998). Mastretta has received numerous awards for her work, including the Xavier Villaurrutia Award (1985), the Mazatlán Prize for Literature (1989), and the National Prize for Arts and Sciences (2006).
