The story follows a middle-aged man named Ivan Dukhovnis, who has been estranged from his family for many years. One day, he receives a letter from his son, asking him to come to the coach house where he is staying with his wife and children. Ivan reluctantly agrees and sets off on his journey, unsure of what to expect. When he arrives at the coach house, he finds his family in a state of turmoil, struggling to make ends meet and dealing with personal conflicts.
