Aphra Behn (1640-1689) was an English playwright, poet, and novelist. She is often credited as one of the first professional female writers in English literature. Behn was born in Kent, England, and was educated in the Netherlands. She returned to England in 1664 and began writing plays and novels. Her works often explored themes of gender, race, and class. She was also a staunch advocate for women's rights. Her most famous works include the plays The Rover (1677) and The Forced Marriage (1670), and the novel Oroonoko (1688). Behn was a prolific writer, and her works are still widely read and studied today.
