Auguste Villiers de Lisle-Adam (1838-1889) was a French poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born in Paris and educated at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He was a member of the Académie française and the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His works include the plays Axël (1890), La Reine Fiammette (1890), and La Ville morte (1890). He also wrote the novels La Fin de Satan (1886) and Le Roman de l'avenir (1888). Villiers de Lisle-Adam was a major figure in the Symbolist movement in French literature. He was known for his use of dreamlike imagery and his exploration of the supernatural. He was also a proponent of the Decadent movement, which focused on themes of death, decay, and decadence.
