Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) was a Christian theologian and philosopher from Roman North Africa. Born in Thagaste (modern-day Algeria), he was initially a Manichaean before converting to Christianity. He became the Bishop of Hippo Regius and is best known for his works "Confessions" and "The City of God." Augustine's writings greatly influenced Western Christianity and philosophy, particularly in the areas of original sin, grace, and the nature of the Church.
