Augustus Allen Hayes

Augustus Allen Hayes (1845-1917) was an American author and journalist. He was born in New York City and educated at the University of Michigan. He began his career as a journalist in the late 1860s, writing for the New York Tribune and other newspapers. He later became a freelance writer, contributing to magazines such as Harper's Weekly and The Atlantic Monthly. Hayes wrote several books, including The Life of General Ulysses S. Grant (1886), The Life of General William T. Sherman (1891), and The Life of General Philip H. Sheridan (1893). He also wrote a number of novels, including The White Squaw (1890) and The Red Man's Revenge (1894). Hayes was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was also a member of the American Historical Association and the American Geographical Society. He died in 1917 in New York City.
