Barack Obama is an American politician and the 44th President of the United States. He was the first African American to be elected to the office. Obama served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008 and as the junior Senator from Illinois from 1997 to 2004. He was a civil rights lawyer and a community organizer before entering politics. Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Obama was the Democratic Party's nominee for President in the 2008 and 2012 elections, and was elected both times. He was re-elected in 2012 with 51.1% of the popular vote. During his first term, Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act. He also ended the Iraq War, increased troop levels in Afghanistan, and ordered military intervention in Libya. In foreign policy, Obama increased U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, reduced nuclear weapons with the United States–Russia New START treaty, and ended military involvement in the Iraq War. He ordered military involvement in Libya in opposition to Muammar Gaddafi; Gaddafi was killed by NATO-assisted forces. He also ordered the military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden.
