Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) was a Spanish realist novelist and playwright. He is considered to be one of the most important Spanish writers of the 19th century. He wrote more than 80 novels and plays, and is best known for his series of historical novels known as the Episodios Nacionales. His works are known for their realism and social criticism, and he is often compared to Charles Dickens and Honoré de Balzac. He was a major influence on later Spanish writers such as Miguel de Unamuno and Ramón del Valle-Inclán. He was also a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.
