Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881-1954) was an American author of novels, short stories, and children's books. She was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and grew up in the nearby town of Elmwood. She attended Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) and taught school for several years before marrying Charles Aldrich in 1906. Aldrich wrote her first novel, A White Bird Flying, in 1918. It was a success and was followed by several other novels, including Mother Mason (1921), The Rim of the Prairie (1924), and A Lantern in Her Hand (1928). She also wrote short stories for magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post and Ladies' Home Journal. Aldrich's works often focused on the lives of rural Midwesterners, and she was praised for her realistic and sympathetic portrayals of small-town life. She was awarded the Newbery Honor in 1929 for her children's book, Song of Years. Aldrich died in 1954 in Elmwood, Iowa.
