Betty Smith

Betty Smith (1896–1972) was an American author best known for her novel "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" (1943). Born Elisabeth Wehner in Brooklyn, New York, she drew heavily on her own experiences growing up in a working-class family. Smith attended the University of Michigan, where she studied journalism and playwriting. Her other notable works include "Tomorrow Will Be Better" (1948), "Maggie-Now" (1958), and "Joy in the Morning" (1963). Smith's writing often explores themes of poverty, resilience, and the immigrant experience.
