Brantz Mayer (1809–1879)

John Jacob Brantz Mayer (1814–1879) was a German-born American historian, lawyer, and author. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1833. He studied law at the University of Pennsylvania and was admitted to the bar in 1837. He practiced law in Philadelphia for several years before becoming a professor of history and political science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1845. Mayer wrote several books on American history, including The Life and Times of George Washington (1855), The Life and Times of Thomas Jefferson (1858), and The Life and Times of James Madison (1860). He also wrote a number of books on European history, including The History of the German Empire (1867) and The History of the French Revolution (1871). He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He died in Philadelphia in 1879.
