C. A. Mercer was an author of short fiction published in The Atlantic Monthly in the early twentieth century. The story that carries the name, The Garden of Memories, was collected in Atlantic Narratives: Modern Short Stories, an anthology of Atlantic Monthly fiction edited by Charles Swain Thomas and issued by the Atlantic Monthly Press in 1918. It follows a man returning to his childhood home, where a once-vibrant garden has grown over and the house has fallen into disrepair. Memories return as he reflects on an upbringing under a stern great-aunt whose presence still seems to hang about the place, and on the distance between the grounds he remembers and the diminished ones he finds. Nothing further is documented: no birth or death dates, no nationality, and no other publications appear under the name in the standard reference sources. Modern novels sharing the title The Garden of Memories are unrelated works by other writers.
