Constance Frederica Gordon-Cumming (1837–1924) was a Scottish travel writer, artist, and diarist. Born on 26 May 1837 at Altyre House, Moray, she was the tenth of eleven children of Sir William Gordon-Cumming, second baronet, and Eliza Maria Campbell. She never married, and published under the byline C. F. Gordon Cumming. Raised in an aristocratic Highland family with strong connections to India, she began travelling widely from the 1860s onward, initially to visit relatives stationed there. Over the following two decades she journeyed to Ceylon, the Himalayas, China, Japan, Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, California, and Egypt, usually as the guest of colonial officials, missionaries, or fellow expatriates rather than as a conventional tourist. She spent extended periods in Fiji during the 1870s, while it was under British influence, and in Hawaii in the late 1870s, where she moved in court and expatriate circles and produced some of her most vivid work. A skilled watercolourist and sketch artist, she illustrated her own books, exhibited her paintings, and was elected a fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Her travel writing was generally composed from letters and journals kept during her voyages, and is marked by close ethnographic observation, missionary sympathies, and an eye for landscape and natural history. Major works include At Home in Fiji (1881), A Lady's Cruise in a French Man-of-War (1882), Fire Fountains: The Kingdom of Hawaii, Its Volcanoes, and the History of Its Missions (1883), Granite Crags (1884), on California and Yosemite, In the Himalayas and on the Indian Plains (1884), Wanderings in China (1886), Two Happy Years in Ceylon (1892), and her autobiography, Memories (1904). Popular with Victorian readers for its combination of adventure, empire-inflected reportage, and religious conviction, her work is read today as much as a document of colonial-era attitudes as for its travel narrative. She died on 4 September 1924 at Crieff, Perthshire.
