Cardinal Moran

Cardinal Patrick Joseph Moran (1830-1911) was an Irish-born Australian Roman Catholic prelate who served as the first Archbishop of Sydney from 1884 to 1911. He was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and was ordained a priest in 1854. He was appointed Bishop of Ossory in 1872 and was consecrated in Rome in 1873. In 1884, he was appointed Archbishop of Sydney and was created a cardinal in 1886. He was a strong advocate for Catholic education and was instrumental in the establishment of several Catholic schools and colleges in Sydney. He was also a strong supporter of the Irish Home Rule movement and was a vocal critic of British rule in Ireland. He died in 1911 and was buried in St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney.
