Charles H. Olmstead is a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of several books on the history of the American West, including The Plains Across: The Overland Emigrants and the Trans-Mississippi West, 1840-60 (University of Illinois Press, 1993) and The Cheyenne and Arapaho Ordeal: Reservation and Agency Life in the Indian Territory, 1875-1907 (University of Oklahoma Press, 2006). He has also written extensively on the history of Native Americans in the United States, including The Cherokees: A Population History (University of Nebraska Press, 1990) and The Choctaws: A Population History (University of Nebraska Press, 1995). He is currently working on a work about the history of the Sioux Nation.
