Charles Hawtrey (1858–1923) was an English actor, singer, and comedian. He was born in London and began his career as a music hall performer. He was best known for his roles in the Carry On films, in which he played a variety of characters, including the bumbling Professor Marcus, the campy Lord Smedley, and the eccentric Captain George Mainwaring. He also appeared in several other films, including The Ghost Train (1931), The Lady Vanishes (1938), and The Belles of St. Trinian's (1954). He was a popular performer on the British stage, appearing in many musicals and revues. He was also a successful recording artist, releasing several albums of popular songs. He died in 1923 at the age of 65.
