Clara Reeve (1729–1807) was an English novelist best known for her Gothic novel "The Old English Baron" (1778). She was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, and was the daughter of a clergyman. Reeve's work often explored themes of chivalry and the supernatural, and she is considered a significant figure in the development of the Gothic novel. Her writing was influenced by Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto," and she sought to refine the Gothic genre by making it more realistic.
