Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie was born on January 17, 1883, in West Hartlepool, England. He was a Scottish novelist and playwright. His early life was marked by a troubled relationship with his father, who was a shipowner. Mackenzie attended Eton College before serving in the British Army during World War I. After the war, he began writing novels that often explored themes of love, relationships, and social class. He is best known for his novels set on the island of Camusfearna, which are semi-autobiographical accounts of his own life. Mackenzie was also a prominent figure in the Scottish literary scene and served as the president of the Scottish National Party from 1942 to 1945.
