David Dudley Field (1805–1894) was an American lawyer and legal reformer. He was born in Haddam, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale College in 1825. He studied law in New York City and was admitted to the bar in 1828. Field was a leader in the movement to simplify and modernize American law. He was the author of the Field Code of Civil Procedure, which was adopted in New York in 1848 and served as the basis for the civil codes of many other states. He also wrote the Field Code of Criminal Procedure, which was adopted in New York in 1881. Field was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1841 and 1842, and a member of the New York State Senate from 1843 to 1845. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1867. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Field was a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and articles on legal topics. He was also a noted lecturer, delivering lectures at Harvard, Yale, and other universities. He died in New York City in 1894.
