David Lindsay (1876–1945) was an English novelist and poet. He is best known for his novel A Voyage to Arcturus, which is considered a classic of fantasy literature. Lindsay was born in London and educated at Dulwich College. He worked as a civil servant for most of his life, but wrote in his spare time. His first novel, The Haunted Woman, was published in 1922. His second novel, A Voyage to Arcturus, was published in 1920 and was an immediate success. It was followed by two more novels, The Violet Apple (1925) and Devil's Tor (1932). Lindsay's works are noted for their philosophical and spiritual themes, as well as their use of symbolism and allegory. He was influenced by the works of William Blake, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Arthur Schopenhauer. His writing style has been compared to that of James Joyce and Franz Kafka. Lindsay died in 1945 in London.
