Born in 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada, E. Pauline Johnson was a Mohawk poet and writer. She was the daughter of George Martin Johnson, a Canadian businessman, and his wife, Emily Susanna Howells Johnson, who was of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry. Johnson's writing often explored her experiences as an Indigenous woman, drawing on her cultural heritage and her observations of the changing world around her. Her work was widely published in magazines and newspapers during her lifetime, and she became a prominent figure in Canadian literary circles. Throughout her life, Johnson struggled with health issues and financial difficulties, but continued to write until her death in 1913 at the age of 51.
