Elias Lönnrot

Elias Lönnrot was a Finnish scholar and collector of oral poetry. He was born on April 9, 1802, in Sammatti, Finland, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Lönnrot studied medicine at the University of Helsinki but later turned to philology and linguistics. He is best known for collecting and compiling traditional Finnish and Karelian oral poetry, which he published as a collection of epic poems called Kalevala in 1835-1869.
