Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was an English poet of the Romantic Movement. She was born in Durham, England, and was the eldest of twelve children. Her father was a wealthy landowner and her mother was a devout Anglican. Barrett Browning was educated at home and was an avid reader from a young age. She wrote her first poem at the age of eleven and published her first book of poetry, An Essay on Mind, in 1826. Her most famous work, Sonnets from the Portuguese, was published in 1850 and is considered one of the most important works of the Victorian era. Barrett Browning was a passionate advocate for social reform and was a vocal supporter of the abolition of slavery. She was also a feminist and wrote extensively about the rights of women. Her work was widely praised and she was one of the most popular poets of her time. Barrett Browning died in 1861 at the age of 55. Her work continues to be studied and admired today.
