Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855–1936) was an American author, journalist, and art critic. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and educated at the Friends' Central School. She began her career as a journalist in 1876, writing for the Philadelphia Press and other publications. She moved to London in 1883, where she wrote for the Pall Mall Gazette and other publications. Pennell was a prolific author, writing books on travel, art, and biography. Her works include The Life of James McNeill Whistler (1889), The Life of Joseph Pennell (1890), and The Life of Charles Dickens (1892). She also wrote several books on travel, including In the Heart of the Vosges (1890) and Through the Heart of Asia (1894). Pennell was an early advocate of modern art, and wrote extensively on the subject. She was a close friend of the artist James McNeill Whistler, and wrote a biography of him. She was also a friend of the artist Joseph Pennell, whom she married in 1892. Pennell was a member of the Royal Society of Literature and the Society of Women Journalists. She died in London in 1936.
