Ellen Craft was an African American woman born into slavery in 1826 in Clinton, Georgia. She is best known for her daring escape from slavery in 1848 with her husband, William Craft. Disguised as a white male planter, she traveled openly with William, who posed as her servant. Their escape and subsequent life in freedom were chronicled in their joint memoir, "Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom," published in 1860. Ellen Craft became an abolitionist speaker and advocate for the rights of African Americans and women.
