Ellis Spear

Ellis Spear (1837-1917) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War. He was born in Maine and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1859. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was commissioned as a captain in the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to major in 1863 and to lieutenant colonel in 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and was brevetted brigadier general in 1865. After the war, Spear returned to Maine and became a lawyer. He wrote The Story of the Raising and Organization of a Regiment of Volunteers in 1862, which was published in 1903. He also wrote several other books about his experiences in the Civil War. He died in 1917.
