Ethel Voynich was born on August 11, 1864, in Liverpool, England. She was the daughter of a Polish émigré and an English mother. Her father was a violinist who had fled Poland after participating in the January Uprising against Russian rule. Voynich studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London but later turned to writing. She married Wilfrid Voynich, a bookseller and antiquarian dealer, in 1892. The couple moved to Paris and then to New York City before settling in London. Ethel Voynich's first novel, "The Gadfly," was published in 1897. It became a bestseller and established her as a prominent writer of the time. She went on to write several more novels, including "The Man of Property" and "The Lost Prince."
