A response from Clifford or Nell, but neither spoke. Clifford's face was set in a determined expression, while Nell looked down, her hands clasped tightly together. "Thank you, Miss Claris," Hemming said finally, breaking the silence. "I appreciate your cooperation. I'll leave you now, but I may need to speak with you again." Nell nodded silently, and Hemming took his leave, closing the door softly behind him. As soon as he was gone, Clifford turned to Nell, his voice gentle but firm. "Nell, you know you can trust me. Whatever it is you're holding back, I want to help you." Nell looked up, her eyes filled with tears. "I know, Clifford. I just... I need to be sure before I say anything more. Please, trust me a little longer." Clifford reached out and took her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. "I do trust you, Nell. Just promise me you'll come to me as soon as you're ready." Nell nodded, a small, grateful smile breaking through her tears. "I promise." With that, Clifford lay back against his pillows, exhaustion overtaking him. Nell stayed by his side, her presence a comfort to them both as they faced the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
