Friedrich Engels

Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary socialist. He was born in Barmen, Germany, and studied at the University of Berlin. He was a close friend and collaborator of Karl Marx, and together they wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848. Engels was a major influence on the development of Marxist theory and wrote several books on the subject, including The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 and The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State in 1884. He was also a successful businessman and was involved in the industrialization of Manchester, England. After Marx's death in 1883, Engels edited and published many of Marx's works. He died in London in 1895.
