G. B. Stern was the pen name of Gladys Bertha Stern (1890–1973), an English novelist, playwright, and memoirist. Born in London on 17 January 1890, she began her career in the theatre before turning to fiction. Her work often examined family life, class, marriage, ambition, and the experience of Jewish families in Britain. She is best known for the Rakonitz novels, beginning with The Matriarch (1924), followed by Deborah (1925) and The Young Matriarch (1927). These books trace several generations of a prosperous Jewish immigrant family and established Stern as a popular and critically respected novelist between the wars. Stern wrote more than forty books, including novels, plays, autobiographical works, and humorous fiction. Her novel The Ugly Dachshund, first published in 1933, later provided the basis for the Disney film of the same name. She continued writing into later life and died on 27 September 1973.
