Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1695-1755) was a French author and fairy tale writer. She is best known for her version of the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, which was first published in 1740. She was born in Paris and was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. She was educated at home and was well-versed in literature, philosophy, and the sciences. She wrote several other fairy tales, including The White Cat, The Fair with the Golden Hair, and The Blue Bird. She also wrote a novel, The Story of the Count of Monte Cristo. Her works were popular during her lifetime and have been adapted into films, television shows, and plays.
