George Howell is credited with “Major Weir’s Coach: a Legend of Edinburgh,” a tale in The Faa’s Revenge, and Other Tales (London: Gall and Inglis, 1892). Set amid civic rivalries, family wrongdoing, and Edinburgh folklore, the story follows Thomas Kerr’s terrifying encounter with a spectral coach, later revealed as a smuggling scheme, and his ensuing moral reform.
