George Norman Douglas

George Norman Douglas (1868–1952) was a British novelist, poet, and travel writer. He was born in Thakeham, Sussex, England, and educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Douglas is best known for his novel South Wind (1917), which was a bestseller in its day and is still in print. He also wrote several other novels, including Old Calabria (1915), The Queen's Progress (1921), and The Pool of Venus (1926). His travel books include In the Wake of the Sun (1912), In the Land of the Lotus Eaters (1914), and The Old Calabrian Coast (1925). Douglas was a member of the literary circle known as the "Neo-Pagans," which included D.H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, and Robert Graves. He was also a friend of the poet Siegfried Sassoon. Douglas died in 1952 in London.
