Gilbert Murray (1866–1957) was an Australian-born British classical scholar and public intellectual. He was a professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow and later at the University of Oxford. He is best known for his translations of Greek drama, especially the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. He was a prominent liberal intellectual and a leading figure in the League of Nations. He was also a vocal advocate of internationalism and a strong supporter of the League of Nations. He was knighted in 1936 for his services to classical scholarship.
