Gregory Blaxland (1778-1853) was an English explorer and settler in Australia. He was born in Kent, England, and emigrated to Australia in 1806. He is best known for leading the first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813, which opened up the interior of the continent to European settlement. Blaxland was a successful farmer and businessman in the colony of New South Wales, and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1843 to 1848. He wrote The Journal of Gregory Blaxland, which was published in 1813 and is an important source of information about early Australian exploration and settlement.
