Harper Lee (1926-2016) was an American novelist best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Published in 1960, the novel was an immediate success and has since become a classic of modern American literature. Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, and attended Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama Law School. She worked as an airline reservation agent and a clerk in a workstore before writing To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee's second novel, Go Set a Watchman, was published in 2015. It was written before To Kill a Mockingbird, but was set 20 years later and featured many of the same characters. Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 and the National Medal of Arts in 2010. She died in 2016 at the age of 89.
