Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) was an American writer and activist. She is best known for her novel Ramona, which was published in 1884 and became a bestseller. She was also an advocate for Native American rights and wrote extensively about the mistreatment of Native Americans by the United States government. She was born in Amherst, Massachusetts and attended the Ipswich Female Seminary in Massachusetts. She married Captain Edward Bissell Hunt in 1852 and had two children. After her husband died in 1863, she moved to Colorado and began writing. She wrote several books, including A Century of Dishonor (1881), which exposed the mistreatment of Native Americans by the US government. She also wrote poetry and short stories. She died in San Francisco in 1885.
