Hendrik Conscience (1812–1883) was a Belgian author and playwright. He is considered to be the founder of the Flemish literature movement. He wrote more than 200 works, including novels, plays, and short stories. His most famous works include The Lion of Flanders (1838), The Poor Miller's Son of Flanders (1841), and The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak (1867). Conscience was born in Antwerp and studied law at the University of Ghent. He was a passionate advocate for the Flemish language and culture, and his works helped to popularize the Flemish language and culture in Belgium. He died in Antwerp in 1883.
