"Secret of the Earth Star" follows the three adopted sons of American statesman Seth Martell—Tony, Phil, and Jimmy—after federal investigators suspect that one of them is secretly the Merlin, a notorious masked outlaw who steals from war-profiteers and corrupt power brokers. Unable to hide indefinitely under modern surveillance, they resolve to vanish into the Foreign Legion, whose private charter grants no extradition to any government. After enlisting in North Africa under assumed names, the brothers are posted to Sub-Sahara, a Legion garrison guarding a hidden underground world beneath the desert inhabited by the Copts, degenerate descendants of ancient Egyptian miners trapped underground since prehistory. Along the way, the Rajah's secretary, Zadah, tracks them to the oasis of Azouad seeking the Earth Star for his own profit, but is subdued by their commanding officer, Captain Brady. At the Sub-Sahara post, the brothers learn that the Copts have kidnapped a legionnaire for a lunar sacrifice tied to their worship of Isis and Osiris. Brady and the ruthless, egotistical Commander Desquer lead a scouting party—including Tony, Phil, and Jimmy—into the forbidden depths called Alu, the "Land of Light," a vast buried cavern city predating dynastic Egypt. En route, a legionnaire named Jacklyn, disfigured by solar burns decades earlier, is unable to seek help from the surface, forcing the group to press on alone toward the ruins. In Alu they discover the awful truth: survivors of sunken Atlantis fled here millennia ago, using advanced science and grafting surgery to create monstrous "gods" with animal heads, ruling the Copts through manufactured religious terror. Captain Brady, having been captured and surgically transformed into a bull-headed hybrid by the high priest Thotmes, dies after revealing the Atlanteans' ultimate plan: a resonance machine hidden in the great pyramid of Alu is vibrating Europe apart, intending to tear the continent free as a second moon—mirroring the ancient catastrophe that sank Atlantis—so the priesthood can later resurface and reclaim world dominion. The group fractures under pressure. Desquer, revealed to be conspiring with Zadah to steal the Earth Star for himself, kills Phil after failing to torture the gem's location from him; before dying, Phil confesses privately to Tony that he was the real Merlin. Jimmy nearly falls victim to Desquer as well, but Tony intervenes. Cornered by Thotmes' priesthood after their ammunition is exhausted, Tony offers up the Earth Star itself as makeshift ammunition, its immense hardness making it a devastating projectile in a carbon-fueled Legion pistol. Desquer kills Thotmes with it, and the priests briefly hesitate in superstitious awe of the gem before Jimmy fires the loaded weapon into the pyramid, obliterating both the ancient machine and the pyramid's support for the cavern roof above. The destruction floods Alu as the subterranean Midnight Sea pours into the ruptured cavern, drowning the lost city, its degenerate priesthood, and its pitiable beast-god victims in fire, flood, and collapse. Desquer is buried under falling rock while pursuing the fleeing brothers. Tony and Jimmy escape through collapsing tunnels to the desert surface, only to be ambushed by the vengeful Zadah, who is killed in the struggle after fatally shooting Jimmy. Left the sole survivor, Tony carries his brothers' bodies away—burying Phil symbolically in the drowned temple of Osiris and releasing Jimmy's body into the Pacific—before turning his plane toward New York. He resolves to keep secret forever that the real Merlin was Phil, sparing Seth Martell's honor and ensuring no one will ever know the truth behind the Earth Star's destruction.
