Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935) was a British diplomat, sinologist, and professor of Chinese at Cambridge University. He was born in Bristol, England, and educated at Clifton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was appointed as a British diplomat to China in 1867, and served in various posts in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service from 1868 to 1892. During this time, he studied Chinese language and literature, and wrote several books on the subject. He was appointed professor of Chinese at Cambridge in 1892, and held the post until 1932. He is best known for his 1892 translation of the Chinese classic, the Analects of Confucius. He also wrote several books on Chinese history, culture, and language, including A Chinese Biographical Dictionary (1898), A History of Chinese Literature (1901), and A Chinese-English Dictionary (1912).
