Herbert Kaufman (1878-1947) was an American journalist, author, and diplomat. He was born in New York City and graduated from Columbia University in 1901. He began his career as a journalist, working for the New York Times and the New York Herald Tribune. He later served as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press in Europe and the Middle East. Kaufman wrote several books, including The Forest and the Fort (1912), The Price of Peace (1917), and The Forest and the Fort Revisited (1921). He also wrote a number of articles for magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine. Kaufman served as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1933 to 1936. He was also a member of the American delegation to the League of Nations in Geneva. Kaufman was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also a member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Historical Association.
