Irving E. Cox, Jr. (1917-2009) was an American author, editor, and publisher. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a degree in English. After college, he worked as an editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and then as a freelance writer and editor. Cox wrote more than 30 books, including novels, non-fiction works, and children's books. He was the editor of the anthology The Best of Science Fiction (1956) and the editor of the magazine Science Fiction Quarterly (1953-1956). He also wrote several books on the history of science fiction, including The Early Science Fiction Makers (1962) and The Science Fiction Encyclopedia (1974). Cox was a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and the Science Fiction Research Association. He was also a founding member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Professional Editor in 1956.
